Coach Lawrence Arnold

Do What You Love and Love What You Do

I have always been in competitive athletics since I was 7 years old. My primary sport was soccer, but I competed in basketball, baseball, and ran track/cross country. I played club soccer in the Dallas area from age 10 through high school graduation. I was on the varsity soccer team at Plano Senior High and won state my senior year. I went on to play soccer in college for 2 years at Centenary College before I transferred to Southwest Texas State (now Texas State). At SWT, I received a BA in Physiology of Exercise with a minor in Geology. After college, I had a friend introduce me to cycling and fell in love with that sport as well. I continued playing soccer in adult leagues in both Austin and Dallas until repeated knee injuries forced me to stop. I have coached all different levels in several different sports.

I was always fascinated with the sport of triathlon and use to watch the Kona Ironman broadcast. I knew I wanted to compete in this sport, but I was scared of the swim. Running and cycling always came pretty naturally, but I knew I needed help to get me comfortable swimming in a group setting. Several years ago, I took a group lesson on triathlon swimming and I quickly realized I can do it. Swimming has now become my stronger of the 3 disciplines and is a strength in my race. I went from struggling at 300 yards to regular workouts over 3000 yards. I now compete in 8-10 triathlon races a year ranging in distances from sprint, Olympic and half ironman events (New Orleans, Austin, and Oceanside 70.3). I also enjoy trail running as well as regular road races.

Triathlon to me is more of a lifestyle than a sport. Competing is fun and keeps my competitive drive going, but the comradery I find in this sport is second to none. Training with my teammates continues to push me to be a better athlete and I am healthier in my 40s than I was when I played Division 1 soccer in college. There is always someone in this sport that pushes you to be better even in a sport that you are really racing a clock. Being competitive can and should still be fun.

I have coached youth sports for many years. I held a US soccer coaching license for 8 years. My last certification (Class A) gave me the ability to coach any level in the US. I coached youth teams ranging from recreational, club, and was an assistant for the U18 Louisiana state team. I currently help coach my boys U6 soccer team for both indoor and outdoor soccer.

As a triathlon coach, I want to pass on the knowledge and experiences I have gained throughout my life. My goal is to incorporate the science of training to enable my athletes to reach their goals while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is my responsibility to help you maintain a balance with school, work, and family obligations.
