What’s Your Number?

Thursday, June 2, 2011 by admin

As triathletes, we tend to be obsessed with numbers.

From heart rate to training zones and mile paces to wattage output, our training logs are littered with numbers.

And let’s not even deal with counting calories.

Numbers drive us.

I have two numbers driving me this year: 26.2 in 4:00:00.

In February, I ran my first full marathon at Cowtown in a respectable 4:35 despite my shins cramping at mile 22 and having to walk the majority of the final four miles. Later that day, my number came to me. By following a marathon-specific training program I believed I could run a sub-four hour marathon.

My final number of the year suddenly became clear: 12/4/2011.

The White Rock Marathon.

For the remainder of the year, I am driven by my numbers. Everything I do must support my numbers.

What numbers are driving you this year? Is it a time? A pace? A date? Where did the number(s) come from?
