It’s the Off Season – Now What?

Triathletes get plenty of advice on what to do with during the “off season” – take a break, focus on your weakness, strength train for injury prevention. All good advice depending on the athlete and their goals; however, I would also like to make another suggestion – focus on nutrition.

What?!! Are you kidding me? It’s the holidays! I’ve been “good” the whole season, the off season is the time to let loose and eat whatever I want!

Listen, I get it. It’s tough to make sure that your nutrition is optimal, especially when you are so busy swimming, biking and running in between things like doing your job and spending time with your family. Having worked with many athletes, I have found that this period of time where they can focus on nutrition sets them up to eat better all year around. Making changes to anything in your life requires time and focus. During the triathlon season, our focus is on training. By taking some time in the off season to make some changes in your diet, you can drop the extra weight that you have been carrying around, develop healthy eating habits and find the diet that works for you and your life.

Focusing on nutrition during the off season has the added bonus of keeping those holiday pounds at bay, which is one less thing that you have to worry about when triathlon season starts up again.
